General adaptation to accented English: Speech intelligibility unaffected by perceived source of non-native accent

چکیده
Foreign-accented speech commonly incurs a processing cost, but this cost can be offset when listeners are given informative cues to the speaker's purported ethnicity and/or language background. This study investigates mechanism that underlies facilitatory effect of top-down expectation, evaluating between general adaptation (an across-the-board relaxation phonetic categorization criteria) and targeted (tuning in accent-specific phonetics). In experiment 1, native speakers American English completed transcription-in-noise task with Chinese-accented sentences. All heard same voice were randomly assigned one four visual conditions: blank silhouette, European face, an East Asian or South face. Results showed although there was no significant condition, who believed speaker non-natively accented enjoyed significantly improved performance compared those reported hearing accent. Crucially, however, correctly perceived as additional benefit over some other foreign basic pattern held even primed expect congruent face-accent pairings (experiment 2). Overall, these results provide evidence for mechanism, rather than involving adjustments.

Accent-independent adaptation to foreign accented speech.
Foreign-accented speech can be difficult to understand but listeners can adapt to novel talkers and accents with appropriate experience. Previous studies have demonstrated talker-independent but accent-dependent learning after training on multiple talkers from a single language background. Here, listeners instead were exposed to talkers from five language backgrounds during training. After trai...
متن کاملPerceived Foreign Accent in Three Varieties of Non-native English*
What aspects of the speech signal cause listeners to perceive a foreign accent? While many studies have explored this question for a single variety of non-native speech, few have simultaneously considered non-native speech from multiple native language backgrounds. In this perception study, American Englishspeaking listeners rated stop-vowel sequences extracted from English words produced by L1...
متن کاملAutomatic accent classification of foreign accented australian English speech
English speech based on accent dependent parallel phoneme recognition (PPR) has been developed. The classifier is designed to process continuous speech and to discriminate between native Australian English (AuE) speakers and two migrant speaker groups with foreign accents, whose first languages are Lebanese Arabic (LA) and South Vietnamese (SV). The training of the system can be automated and i...
متن کاملAccent Morphing as a Technique to Improve the Intelligibility of Foreign-accented Speech
Accent morphing aims to modify the accent of a speaker whilst maintaining speaker identity. A textindependent approach could be based on voice conversion systems which manipulate speaker identity through spectral mapping. However, it is not clear to what extent accent changes can be captured with spectral mapping alone. In this paper we implement and evaluate a text-dependent accent morphing sy...
متن کاملComparing intelligibility of several non-native accent classes in noise
How does noise affect perception of foreign accented speech? English sentences spoken by non-native talkers with various language backgrounds were presented to native speakers. The Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) was found for 5 different accent classes, and contrasted with noise-free intelligibility. Modest trends towards global differences in intelligibility based on accent class were found,...
